Why choose wood wick candles?
If you're an avid candle lover (such as moi), you are already aware of the various candles out there - from vessel type, wax choice and scent choice. Similarly, there are also two differing wicks to choose from - wood and cotton.
Wood wicks are a modern twist on the traditional wax-and-wick combo and have gained popularity over recent years for their unique characteristics. They are distinctively thin strips of wood specifically made to be used in candle-making. There are various types of wood on the market and are created at different widths to suit the individual candle needs.
What are the benefits of using a wood wick?
We often get questions on our wood wicks, so we thought we would share why we use them, their benefits and how they are different from regular cotton wicks.
- Crackling ambience: one of the most enchanting features of wood wick candles is their soft, crackling sound reminiscent of a cozy fireplace. The gentle crackle adds an extra layer of tranquillity to your space, making it perfect for relaxing after a long day.
- Clean burn: say goodbye to soot and residue and hello to a clean burning candle! Wood wicks don’t "mushroom" therefore, they provide minimal carbon, soot, and debris build up. They have also been proven to be more sustainable than cotton wicks. You can get thousands of wicks from one tree, and they are left untreated, so there are no chemicals floating into the air when your candle is lit. It's important to trim off any charred wood from previous burns, prior to starting a new burn, and your flame will continue to shine bright.
- Longevity: wood wick candles tend to burn more slowly than traditional cotton wick candles. This means you'll enjoy their inviting glow and captivating scent for a longer duration, making them a more cost-effective option in the long run.
- Even burn: the wider flame created by a wood wick often leads to a more even burn across the candle's surface, ensuring the melt pool reaches the edges of the candle vessel. This can prevent the unsightly "tunnelling" effect seen in some candles, ensuring you get the most out of your purchase. For more information on candle tunnelling, click here.
- Stronger fragrance throw: the wider flame created by a wood wick leads to a more even burn that diffuses heat more rapidly into the wax, allowing them to push up to 35% more fragrance throw into a room than traditional cotton wicks.
Maintaining your wood wick:
We are obsessed with wood wicks because they provide a unique and delightful experience, but our wicks are also cut from FSC certified, untreated wood! Therefore, due to their natural properties, there may be slight variances in the thickness and grain of each wick. As a result, each candle may burn slightly differently and may require some love and maintenance. Please read the below for full guidance on how to properly light and care for your new candle!
Steps:
- Prior to every burn, trim your wood wick to 1/4 inch. The shorter height allows the wax to capillary up the wick to feed the flame properly.
- Allow the wax to fully melt to the edge of the candle vessel, both on the first burn and every consecutive burn after! (this may take a couple of hours).
- Do not burn the candle for more than 4 hours at a time. When there is only 1/2 inch of wax remaining in the candle vessel, it's time for a new one!
